CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS ANCHOR: Hi. I`m Carl Azuz. Welcome to CNN STUDENT NEWS.

First up this Tuesday, officials in France have started clearing the way of "The Jungle". That`s the nickname for a refugee camp. It`s become a symbol of the challenges that the continent has faced in most serious refugee crisis since World War II. The jungles in the northern French city of Calais, it`s made up of tents, makeshift shelters, campers and bad shape and thousands of migrants and refugees live there, many of them from Afghanistan, Eritrea and Sudan. 

So, why Calais? Because it`s connected by an undersea tunnel to Britain and many migrants wanted to get to Britain because its economy is relatively good and its employment rate is slow.

But European Union rules say migrants have to apply for asylum to stay in the first European country they arrive in -- so, France in this case. And that nation`s government says they can either stay in France or go back to their home countries. There`s been some violence between the migrants who 
don`t want to leave and police, and the relocation process could take a week.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

MELISSA BELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The migrants began lining up here even before the sun had risen. The many hundreds who are determined to take up the French government`s offer and try to seek asylum in one of France`s regions. They go through this line into the hangar just over, where they get to choose a region and they`re put on busses and taken directly to where they`re to see asylum, which is why they`ve come with all their worldly belongings.

This in the sense is the first part of the process -- the evacuation of the camp ahead of its demolition. We caught up with one of those migrants who`ve arrived nice and early to ask him why he`d chosen to give up on his dream of getting one day to the United Kingdom.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I feel better. It`s good for us. So, we`re living like animals, not like humans. Did you see the jungle, some places? It`s very sad place, boring place. So, like animals, we live like animals in the jungle.

BELL: One of those who`s decided to take up the French government`s offer. In the sense, though, the much more difficult part of this process begins when the bulldozers move in and the camp itself begins to be dismantled. We`ve heard from many people who do not want to take up the French 
government`s offer and who are determined instead of clinging on to their dream of making it to the U.K., and that`s why the police presence here, is as great as it is, 1,200 orderly policemen and riot policemen are on standby to deal with that second part of the evacuation, the dismantling of the camp itself.

SUBTITLE: Bermuda Triangle mystery solved?

The Bermuda Triangle is the triangular area of ocean between Bermuda, Miami, and Puerto Rico. 

It has long been associated with mysterious disappearances and paranormal activity.

A Science Channel report found hexagon-shaped "air bombs" over the region.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: These types of hexagonal shapes of the ocean are in essence air bombs. They`re formed by what are called micro bursts and they`re blasts of air that come down to the bottom of the cloud and then hit the ocean, and then create waves that can sometimes be massive in size as they start to interact with each other.

SUBTITLE: The report suggests that 170-mph "air bombs" can bring down planes and ships. 

Researchers concluded this after studying similar cloud formations in Europe`s North Sea.

But meteorologists say this is a common weather pattern seen all over the world. 

The debate continues over the mysteries surrounding the Bermuda Triangle, but it has not been solved.

AZUZ: Up next, selfies. Love `em or hate `em, a recent study from Penn State University examined the science viewing them. It looked at survey responses from 255 people. It focused on how they reacted to seeing other people`s selfies on social media. 

It found that those who spent a lot of time looking at other selfies tended to feel worse about themselves. Researchers think it might because of jealousy or feeling their own lives don`t measure up. 

There`s a different response, though, to groupies -- selfies of a group of people. And the study found that those who spent time looking at groupies tended to feel better about themselves. It might have something to do with the sense of belonging, a connection to the community in the picture.

Some research on the effects of posting selfies is inconclusive. It`s not clear if it makes the poster feel better or worse. For many, it depends on the kinds of responses they get to their selfies.

Kicking off a two-part series today on videogames. The industry had more than $23 billion in revenue last year, a 2015 Pew survey indicated that 72 percent of American teenagers play them, about 84 percent of all boys in the U.S. and 59 percent of all girls. But games have their downsides, as well as their upsides. And this week, we`re examining both, starting with the mental and physical threats they can pose to gamers.

DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN CHIEF MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The game is DOTA 2 and this is the international tournament. At stake, a whole lot of cash and bragging rights that your team is the best in the world. 

(on camera): How did you get into gaming in the first place?

CLINTON `FEAR" LOOMIS, EVIL GENIUSES: I started playing online and just got really hooked to this game. And then, eventually, out of nowhere, just some team just like, you know, do you want to win some gear by playing in this tournament. I`m like, yes, sure that sounds fun, and just slowly 
progress and getting paid a little bit. First, you got gear and then you got paid a little salary. 

And then, here we are today, these multimillion dollar tournaments.

GUPTA: Just going back to that early time, though, what was about the gaming that really attracted to, do you think?

LOOMIS: It was just like very mentally stimulating I guess. It could keep my attention for hours and then you make little mistakes and like you just want to play a new one to fix those mistakes. So, it was just like every game just made you want to play better. So, I just like it was very addicting I guess.

GUPTA (voice-over): And that addiction helps explain why DOTA claims more than 13 million unique players a month. Spending too much time in videogaming`s alternative world can lead to some serious real world injuries. 

DR. LEVI HARRISON, ESPORTS DOCTOR: So, this your ulnar styloid.

GUPTA: Dr. Levi Harrison is the self-proclaimed and now trademarked eSports doctor. Dr. Levi is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand, wrist and upper extremity conditions. Gamers seek him out from just down the street in California, and from as far away as the Middle East.

(on camera): What are the certain types of injuries that are most common?

HARRISON: Well, yes, I see a lot of repetitive cases (ph) specifically tendinitis. I also see carpal tunnel. I see (INAUDIBLE)

GUPTA: Somebody came to me and I don`t take care of these types of injuries. But if someone came to me and said, look, I`m having a lot of pain from playing these games, I would say?

HARRISON: You would say -- 

GUPTA: Don`t play these games as much.

HARRISON: And I would say, not necessarily. Take a five minute break every sixty minutes, doing the stretches, doing the exercises. But more importantly, stay well-hydrated when you`re gaming, to not just sit there for 12 and 14 hours.

GUPTA (voice-over): But the problem with extreme gamers, they just don`t know when enough is enough. China was the first country in the world to declare Internet addiction a clinical disorder in 2008. These teenagers in Beijing can`t pull themselves away from the computer, not to eat, not to 
sleep, not even to go to school. 

The documentary "Web Junkie" follows them as their parents have them admitted to Daxing Internet Addiction treatment Center. It`s an attempt to break them of their bad habits. 

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (translated): Some kids are so hooked on these games they think going to the bathroom will affect their performance. So, they wear a diaper.

GUPTA: We decided to go see Director Tao Ran ourselves. He`s the psychologist who established this facility to teach children how to use the Internet responsibly.

Tao says he`s rescued thousands of addicted teens through a mixture of medicine and psychology. He claims 80 percent of teenagers can recover if their family is engaged in the process, but only half that if they`re going it alone.

So, here, the boys are learning basic life skills, like washing clouds and making their beds. As well as games that challenge their minds and bodies. 

They tell us Tao`s program has helped their relationship with their families and that when they leave, they`re going to spend more time in the real world.

AZUZ: Before we go, it`s like a hotel room with no heat, no room service and no walls. It`s located in Estes Park, Colorado, and costs $1,200 a night, but you can`t beat the view.

Cliff camping, sleeping on the face of a cliff used to be for experience climbers only. But a U.S. company is helping amateur climbers do it. A guide goes with you to help set up your hanging cot, and then you`re free to relax, assuming you could relax. 

It might leave experience climbers stone-faced, but it might be rappelling to others and set them on edge. You`d have to get accliffated and you`d be adrenaline for a long time. But as long as you don`t mind a rock-hard headboard and you don`t ever sleepwalk, this could be great for someone who 
really likes hanging out.

CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS ANCHOR: Welcome to CNN STUDENT NEWS, where Fridays are awesome! Well, they`re pretty much awesome everywhere. I`m Carl Azuz. 

We hope you got a great weekend ahead of you. Let`s get you caught up on current events before that.

First up, a setback for the European Space Agency. Working together with Russia, the ESA is testing its ability to land a spacecraft on Mars. Its scientists are hoping to find out whether life has ever existed there. 

But the latest lander it sent named Schiaparelli appears to have crashed on the red planet, instead of landing softly as planned. It looks like its parachute and landing rockets malfunctioned and Schiaparelli didn`t send back any signals after its high speed descent through the Martian
atmosphere on Wednesday. 

This wouldn`t be the first lander the ESA has lost on Mars. But the agency says another part of its $1.5 billion mission involving a craft that`s orbiting Mars is working. And ESA officials are moving forward with plans for a bigger project. They want to send a rover to Mars in 2020.

Next to the Philippines. The Pacific island nation has been hit by two typhoons in one week and both of them were the equivalent of category four hurricanes. At least three people were killed last Sunday when Typhoon Sarika made landfall in the northern Philippines. Thousands had to leave their homes.

And then on Thursday, the cleanup began again, this time for a typhoon named Haima. It hit the northeastern Philippines, affecting crops, buildings and as many as 2.7 million in some way. Both systems were headed to China afterward where hundreds of thousands were evacuated and recovery 
teams were deployed.

Meantime, a political storm is brewing between the Philippines and the U.S. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has spoken out recently against U.S. 

President Barack Obama. And though the U.S. and the Philippines historically had been allies, President Duterte appears to be pivoting, realigning his country more closely with China. During his visit to China on Thursday, he announced his, quote, "separation from the United States". 

Analysts are trying to figure out what exactly that means.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

MATT RIVERS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Militarily, the United States and the Philippines are treaty allies, with a mutual defense obligation. 

The U.S. regularly rotates military troops and equipment through the Philippines and the two countries have also conducted several joint naval patrols in the South China Sea this year. 

A true separation as President Duterte suggested would mean an end to both the treaty and the troop presence. But President Duterte has made statements before that his staff then has been forced to walk back or clarify. CNN reached out to Duterte`s office for more details on his announcement, we receive no reply.

In the past, Duterte has expressed anger over the U.S. military presence but said the treaty would remain because his advisers told him it was necessary. He did however cancelled joint military exercises set for next year. What Duterte meant by separating economically is less clear, though 
U.S.-Philippine trade is worth tens of billions of dollars. In that same speech, the president also indicated what he has said for months now, that he wants to leave the U.S. behind in exchange for new, stronger allies.

AZUZ: Last week, we told you how the U.S. government has accused the Russian government of hacking into American computers and stealing political documents. This subject came up again during Wednesday night`s U.S. presidential debate. Some of the information that`s been released 
from the hacks has been damaging to the Democratic Party. The Obama administration says Russia is meddling in the upcoming election, something that Russia has repeatedly denied. 

But what could happen next if a fight broke out in cyber space?

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JIM SCIUTTO, CNN CHIEF NATIONAL SECURITY CORRESPONDENT: The U.S. has now publicly blamed Russia for hacking the U.S. elections. So, what are its options to respond?

First option is to publicly name and shame Russia for hacking the U.S. election. This is something that the U.S. has now done.

Second option is economic sanctions, either against the hackers themselves, or groups working for the Russian government, individuals, perhaps senior 

Russian leaders who approved the hacks, or Russian institutions. And this is a tactic that the U.S. has used and is using against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Another option is to file criminal charges against the hackers or hacking group. The trouble with that is you have to meet a very high level standard to pursue those charges. 

A further option would be diplomatic response, perhaps in the U.N., perhaps punishing Russia on other areas of agreement. 

Final option, perhaps the most serious, would be to attack back in the cyber sphere. And again, a whole range of options here. This could be limited, hacking the hackers, going after the groups that are carrying this out. It could be something similar to what Russia has done here to the 

U.S., exposing what could be embarrassing information about senior Russian leaders, or something more serious, cyberattacks that could say, turn the lights out in Moscow.

The trouble with these options, one, you have to be certain that it is Russia that`s doing this. But also the bigger fear and this is something a particular concern to the Obama administration, is escalation. If you attack back, does that push Russia to attack back again and worse?

AZUZ: You don`t have to look too far to see examples of cyber bullying, particularly at the grade school level or the programs that try to reduce it. But as an eighth grader, Matthew Kaplan came up with his own program, a workshop to help his younger brother. And that led to something that`s 
been shared with more than 4,600 middle school students, mostly in Arizona.

MATTHEW KAPLAN, CNN HERO: A school is supposed to be a dispositive place where people can be themselves, and when you`re bullied, you feel like you`re in the outside.

My younger brother Josh and I were always really close. In middle school, Josh started to receive text messages and emails telling him that he was stupid and work bust. So, I took action. In eighth grade, I decided to create program just for my brother`s class. 

The Be ONE project is an instructive program for middle school students. 

We start the day with ice breaker games to get kids up meeting with people.

Each going to take time to share a little bit more about ourselves.

And as we build that sense of trust and community, then we slowly start to incorporate elements to the anti-bullying.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I act very outgoing so that I don`t have to talk about the hardest stuff.

KAPLAN: The program just brings people together.

If you have ever received a text message that had a hurtful message.

When kids see that their classmates have similar struggles, they realized that they`re not alone.

Put your ones up if you`re wiling to be open to creating this one environment that you want to see.

Everyone should be able to go to a school where they feel valued and accepted by their classmates, and I want to make sure that they can.

AZUZ: Before we go, check out this big old lobster. A fisherman in Bermuda caught it a day after Hurricane Nicole hit the island. Marine biologists think the storm brought the deep water bottom feeder closer to shallower surfaces.

For perspective, the average lobster weighs about a pound. This one weighs 14. Too bad it wasn`t caught with a bucket of drawn butter. That didn`t matter any way, though. It was released shortly afterward back into the deep blue sea.

More like a crush station. You couldn`t lob it back into the ocean. Instead of a carapace, it had a scaraface, needed an XL, exoskeleton to cover the long, langouste. 

But even though a storm lobstered it up, it`s now free and probably feeling a lot less crabby.

CNN Student News - October 19, 2016

CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS ANCHOR: Hi. I`m Carl Azuz. Welcome to the show.

Stories from Egypt and Peru start things off today. 

Our first report is from North Africa. Scientists examining the Great Pyramid of Giza think they might have discovered two hidden rooms in the structure. The Great Pyramid is the largest of Giza`s three pyramids. Researchers believe it was built more than 4,500 years ago. 

Scientists have been scanning the pyramid, kind of like taking x-rays and heat scans of it, and they detected what could be unknown cavities or rooms inside the structure. More tests are needed before researchers can be sure these rooms are significant. At this point, they only add to the mysteries 
 of the Great Pyramid.

Another mystery is troubling officials in South America. Thousands of critically endangered frogs living near Peru`s Lake Titicaca have died and  no one knows why. The Titicaca water frog has struggled in recent decades. It`s been overhunted for food, it`s lost parts of its habitat, exotic trout 

have been eaten the frog`s tadpoles. 

But investigators are trying to find out what`s causing so many of them to suddenly turn up dead. Some residents of the area think that raw sewage coming from a nearby city might be killing the frog.

Tonight is the last of three head-to-head debates between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. It`s scheduled to start at 9:00 p.m. Eastern at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. You can watch it live on CNN.

This debate will have the same format as the first one, with the two candidates taking questions from a moderator. And for this event, that moderator will be a FOX News anchor named Chris Wallace.

But keep in mind, it`s not just president that Americans will be voting for on November 8th. All 435 voting members of the U.S. House of Representatives will be chosen, as they are every two years. In the 100- member Senate, about a third of the seats will be determined. Senate terms are for six years.

Currently, Republicans control both chambers of Congress. But just like the uncertainty surrounding the presidential election itself, there`s uncertainty over who control Congress after the election.

REPORTER: For the Senate, the math is complicated. Right now, the Senate has 54 Republicans, 44 Democrats and two independents. Thirty-four senators are up for reelection this year.

Here`s a thing you need to remember and Republicans wish they could forget: Democrats only need to gain five seats to gain control of the Senate. They face a more difficult battle, though, in the House of Representatives. Democrats need to gain 30 seats to win back the majority there. It`s a high hurdle with relatively few competitive districts. But House Minority Nancy Pelosi said that if the election were held this week, Democrats would regain control of the House.

Republicans disagree. Still, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan told Republican donors that Trump`s numbers are worse than John McCain`s were in 2008. 2008 is the year that Democrats did indeed win back the House of Representatives and Pelosi was speaker of the House. They held control for  the first two years of Barack Obama`s presidency.

Why are the House and Senate so important? Well, first, they share responsibility for creating and passing the country`s laws. Second, Senate confirms or rejects the president`s nominees to the Supreme Court.

AZUZ: The U.S. government says that in 2007, 8 percent of American law enforcement agencies thought heroin was the greatest drug threat in their area. This year, 45 percent of agencies say so. It`s a symptom of the problem -- the epidemic of heroin abuse in America. 

Continuing our series on this today, we`re introducing you a doctor who`s helping her community fight back.

DR. JOAN PAPP, METROHEALTH EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT PHYSICIAN: She wasn`t moving anything. She wasn`t responding to anyone. She was just a young beautiful girl.

This is a case where maybe I can`t save this young lady, but there`s something that I can do to prevent more people like her from going down this path.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Dr. Joan Papp is a dedicated fighter on the frontlines of America`s heroin epidemic. She`s an emergency doctor in Cuyahoga County, which is on pace to see the highest number of heroin and fentanyl deaths in its history.

Nearly every day, Dr. Papp sees someone affected by the crisis.

DR. PAPP: Right now, we are facing a crisis in our community. It has gotten so bad that we have seen a number of overdoses quadruple and we are on track to reach nearly 500 overdose deaths by the end of this year.

FEYERICK (on camera): Do you ever look at somebody who`s on heroin and say, this could be somebody I know and maybe it is somebody I know.

DR. PAPP: Absolutely. And, you know, if you just look at the demographic of people who are using heroin, we see an increasing number of females who are using heroin. About 50 percent of the overdose deaths occur in the community, suburban setting. 

This does sound like right around the corner here.

We are in the suburbs. This is sort of a middle class suburb and a lot of professionals, a lot of young families. 

Hello. I`m exhausted. It`s good to see you.

JESSE PAPP, JOAN`S HUSBAND: If it`s a normal night shift, you know, try to get let her get eight or nine hours. 

You know, it`s sad that she sees that kind of stuff almost daily anymore. It used to be once in a great while and it`s just an every day thing now.

DR. PAPP: How did your presentation go?

One of the reasons that I care so much about this problem is because I have three boys. I love them so much.

So, Jesse is the only one with the home work. That seems strange.

We know that this problem started with a prescription painkiller problem. Typically, prescription painkillers, they were obtained from a doctor, from a prescription. Of course, as a doctor, that bothers me. In some ways, our profession is responsible for starting this epidemic.

My children are white males who live in the suburbs. And what I`m seeing what come to our overdose prevention program are white males who live in  the suburbs. I can`t help but think what is to stop, you know, my children from going down that path.

So, Naloxone is a drug that we use in the emergency department to reverse the effects of an overdose.

FEYERICK (voice-over): Dr. Papp is also medical director of Project Dawn, a program that teaches people how to reverse opioid overdoses by using a nasal spray form of Naloxone. Kits are handed out to active heroin users or family and friends like Jeff Acenda (ph), a former addict who would step 

in if someone were in trouble.

DR. PAPP: We need to blanket the community with Naloxone. Police need to be carrying Naloxone. Private citizens need to be carrying Naloxone.

FEYERICK: Those kits had stopped hundreds of potentially fatal heroin overdoses in the Cleveland area since 2013. 

DR. PAPP: You may know several people who are addicted to heroin and you just have no idea. 

Now, whether you know it or not, you`re paying for this problem. You`re paying for the cost of effects of injection drug use because of dirty needles. So, there`s a cost not only in lives but a cost in actual dollars, too.

We`ve actually found that people are less risky when they have access Naloxone.

I think talking is so important, making sure that there`s good access to resources, making sure that the people know how serious this problem is. 

FEYERICK: Half is passionate about stemming the tide of heroin in her community. She speaks regularly to people touched in some way by the epidemic. 

DR. PAPP: You have a person in front of you who is blue, who`s unresponsive. 

FEYERICK: Urging them to learn how to use the overdose antidote.

DR. PAPP: It`s always hard to talk to some of the folks who really live this. You know, the "thank yous" that I get really makes everything worth it. And I know that I`m making a difference when I talk to people.

AZUZ: It all started with the viral video of a police lieutenant dancing in a charity event. But it didn`t stop there. As you can see from this video on Twitter, he was recently asked to do it again at a pep rally at North Stafford High School in Stafford, Virginia. The officer`s fiancee teaches there and apparently, the pep rally hadn`t pepped up enough of the students. So, it was the officer`s dancing that caused the whole event to rally.

Certified by the police academy and the dance academy, the officer broke the laws -- of physics. His steps were anything but uniform, his moves simply arresting, seems he`s got the right to remain awesome!
